How Social Media Transforms Queer Humour into Community
Question 1: When I think back on my presentation, I see that one of its shortcomings was that I neglected…
Hey Jasmine, I think this is a really important and smart way to present how social media affordances shape queer communities, considering how many young queer people rely on humour as a coping mechanism. Some questions I have based on your presentation are:
1: You brought up an interesting point about how humour (specifically certain quotes by the queer influencer Rupaul) creates a shared cultural language and sense of belonging within the queer community. Do you think this could potentially exclude users who are new to the queer community or don’t yet understand the references yet? if so could it create boundaries that make it harder for new users to feel included?
2: Your examples do a great job at demonstrating the positive role humour and meme culture on social media have in creating connection and forming community among queer people. Are there any limitations or risks that may arise from this? for example do you think in some ways humour has downplayed or trivialised more serious issues or experiences faced by communities? if so how may it effect individuals who are navigating queer life.
3: You talked about how humour becomes shared through trends and sounds. Do you think platforms like Tiktok are mainly just supporting pre-exsisting queer communities (for example the RuPaul fan community), or do you think the algorithm is partially responsible in shaping what kind of queer humour or culture becomes visible or popular.
