Slushy Noobz- Fandom Culture by Robin Legaspi

This video dives into the Slushy Noobz fandom and how it has grown into a tight‑knit online community. I explore how fans use TikTok, Instagram, and Discord to create shared meaning, build inside jokes, and form a fandom public. Using media theory and real examples, I show how platform features and participatory culture help shape this modern micro‑fandom

Really great choice of case study, the Slushy Noobz grew extremely quickly, using TikTok, Instagram and YouTube to their advantage to reach as many people as possible in recent times, so I think it’s a very interesting example. The presence of inside jokes was something I mentioned that helped grow fandom relationships, so it was interesting to see it put through the lens of the slushies.

It’s interesting to see the similarities in my case study of a very traditional group, The Beatles, to something as unconventional as the Slushy Noobz, who continue to push boundaries with their content and advertising.

I thought your analysis of TikTok’s affordances was well worded, and your analysis of hierarchy in fandoms was something I also touched on in my own case study, so seeing it from a new angle is very interesting.

Overall, a really interesting study on a very recently established fandom. Personally, I love the Slushy Noobz so this analysis was extremely entertaining.

      Hey Pietro!
Thank you so much, it is pretty interesting to see how the traditional group you studied shared so many similarities to the Slushy Noobz!! So happy to meet a fellow slushy 🙂
I am so glad you enjoyed my analysis and thank you again for your feedback , much appreciated.

Hey Robin, this was a really engaging and well-structured presentation. I wasn’t familiar with Slushy Noobs whatsoever prior to watching, so it was interesting to see how a smaller, niche community can still demonstrate such strong forms of interaction and identity.

Q1) You show very clearly how participatory culture and platform affordances sustain interaction within a niche fandom. How do you think these same processes might operate with a larger-scale fandom, particularly in maintaining ongoing participation and engagement?

Q2) You highlight the role of exclusivity on Discord, particularly through the Patreon paywall. Do you think this kind of restricted access strengthens community cohesion, or could it potentially limit broader community growth and participation?

Q3) Your analysis puts focus on TikTok and Discord as complementary platforms. How might the dynamics of this fandom change if it existed primarily on just one platform rather than across multiple spaces?

    Thanks ✌️
    Cassidy.

    Hi Robin,

I am also a fan of slushy noobz ive been watching their youtube vids and podcast for the past few months and recently ive been obsessed with Mandy’s channel haha love her and the played up beef bewteen herself and Hamzah over Martin lol. I think Hamzah is super great at creating the concept and I knew him from his roots of freakshow days hahah!! And Martin is a comedy genius! They really use social media affordances to their advantage there is so much content out there of them on many different platforms. My only thought or question is to what extent does Slushy Noobz’s niche comedic style create a highly engaged fandom public, and what are the potential trade-offs in terms of accessibility or broader audience expansion? I feel like slushy noobz are super niche so i wonder how they will continue to grow and expand. Good luck with the rest of your conference! loved this 🙂

      Hi Sienna!

Oh my goodness I absoloutely adore mandys channel too, probably just as much as the Slushy Nobbz, definently a breath of fresh air in comparison from the overstimulating videos with Martin and Hamzah haha.
Martin really is amazing, he is so funny just as himself even out of charaacter.
I would definitely say Slushy Noobz is not for everyone, and i think the fact that their humour is niche and is only properly received by a certain in-group is what makes their fandom so strong. While I do think they will grow, probably with their gaming videos, like if they continued their minecraft gameplays without using hacks haha, they could possibly reach that broader audience of individuals who love minecraft playthroughs :)!
Good luck on the rest of your conference too and thank you so much for asking me that question !
