Wattpad’s online affordances in a fan culture sphere – Genevieve Martin

Presented by Genevieve Martin.

Hi Genevieve, I really enjoyed your presentation on the Wattpad’s online affordances in a fan culture sphere.

    Here are my 3 questions:

    Question 1:
You describe Wattpad as both a supportive community space and one that can normalise harmful tropes—where do you think the line should be drawn between creative freedom and platform responsibility?

    Question 2:
To what extent do you think young readers are actively interpreting these fanfiction tropes versus passively absorbing them into their understanding of relationships and identity?

    Question 3:
Given that the K-pop industries actively encourage emotional fan attachment, do you think they hold any responsibility for how fans reinterpret idols through platforms like Wattpad?
