Hi Isaac, you did a great job explaining how the discussions about Echo on Reddit move from being based on a fan community to becoming moments of community for people with disabilities. I think one of the things that made this presentation so effective was the way you used examples to make your argument clearer and more interesting. Specifically, you really built upon the idea of Alaqua Cox, a character who has become disabled by her injury in the show, to illustrate some of the ways in which these conversations have been shaped.
Additionally, you seemed to have a good grasp on many of the concepts we’ve explored throughout this unit (like platform affordances) and demonstrated how those are connected to ideas about peer learning and shared meaning-making.
If you want to do even better next time, consider expanding more on the limitations you identified (i.e., ableist assumptions) and analysing what impact those limitations would have on whether or not Reddit could actually be seen as an inclusive space.

    1. You explain how the conversations about Echo on Reddit create opportunities for a community of people with disabilities — how do you believe the opportunity to build a community will be different when using social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram, which do not allow for threaded conversation?

    2. You stated that while there is potential for misunderstanding and ableism within Reddit communities (due to its open forum), do you feel that those challenges create an environment that may prevent Reddit from being considered a “community” or do they ultimately contribute to forming one?

    3. How did your research on disability representation in Echo relate to broader issues in the media industry, such as diversity and authenticity in casting? Do you feel that instances like Alaqua Cox represent long-lasting change or are simply exceptions?
