Post-war Trauma and Disability in Harry Potter Drarry Fanfiction: Community Formation and Romanticisation of Trauma – Jillaine Buenaventura

Brief Summary:

This presentation delves into how disability is represented and interpreted in Harry Potter fanfiction as a case study of community formation. Focusing on the popular slash ship Drarry – the pairing between Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy -, it explores how post-war fanfiction often depicts trauma and disability narratives on fanfiction platforms like Archive of Our Own (AO3) and Fanfiction.net. Drawing on the concepts of affordances and fandom publics, the presentation explains how these platform features enable fans to form communities through tagging systems, comments, bookmarks, and shared emotional investment.

1)I really like your point about the platform AO3’s tagging system that contributes to searchability. And it made me want to ask what type of social media affordance like social affordance or technology affordance is AO3 engaging with?

2)I feel interested when you talk about the “ship” between Harry and Draco, such as the piano shop. I wonder whether readers are mainly drawn to these stories for the romance, or whether some are also seeking comfort and a sense of belonging because of their similar experiences of vulnerability or trauma? And do trauma and disability narratives in Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy fanfiction create an issue public based on shared issue or emotions?

3)You mentioned that fan fiction may turn vulnerability as “desirable” and create contents like “porn and romance”. Moreover, this may lead to the spread of such contents inside closed, private, group chats. What do you think the platforms like AO3 should do to prevent this?
