Abstract

Introducing new technologies has created platforms for people to develop a voice for their opinions and beliefs. Platforms have developed a tool in which individuals have the power of freedom of speech or, in other words, a point of view that they can share on their own with anyone at any time. This conference paper argues that social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for raising awareness about political issues on a global level. Throughout this text, there is an understanding of several areas in which technologies can be used to spread awareness. As technologies evolve and new social platforms are developed, social media’s ability to increase international awareness of social and political issues is becoming more prevalent.

Introduction:

Today, communication is ever-evolving with new technologies; through the rise of new social trends and self-representation, users have created online communities to build a political point of view on specific topics and raise awareness of situations worldwide. Social media marketing has grown into the dominant tool in which a person can build awareness and influence on a global scale. You may ask yourself, “How might social media positively and negatively affect and allow social “change?”. This standpoint is where social networks have the power to create change through the rapid evolution of online platforms. Platforms have developed a tool in which individuals have the power of freedom of speech or, in other words, a point of view that they can share on their own with anyone at any time. This conference paper argues that social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for raising awareness about political issues and have created the rise of social trends and self-representation. Users have formed online communities to build political points of view on specific topics and raise awareness of global concerns. As technologies evolve and new social platforms are developed, the media’s ability to increase international awareness of social and political issues is becoming more prevalent.

The Power Of Influencers:

Introducing new technologies has created platforms for people to develop a voice for their opinions and beliefs. Having today’s today’s society creates a community in which people believe and follow what you may portray through social media platforms. The sudden emergence of “influencing has created a path where people can advocate for topics such as activism for Palestine and, through social media technologies, create hashtags that start to trend and spread awareness worldwide (Karamar & Farooq, 2016). A particular person of focus, Bella Hadid, used her online presence to give a voice to the Palestinians and the war that is going on between them and Israel. This has become a controversy as such a large platform of 60.8 million creates a topic of discussion. Media can give back control to the voices of those who have been silenced. It is essential to understand the strength a simple post may have towards a movement and the power it creates for more and more people to become a part of the ‘trend’ and share more worldwide (Karamar & Farooq, 2016). We see this through Bella Hadid’s post, where she posted the word” Palestine” with three love hearts, with the colours representing the Palestinian flag, creating positive and negative reactions worldwide (Dunn, 2023). This isn’t the first time the model has posted her support for Palestine; back in 2020, she posted that she would donate to charities that support those who have experienced conflict during the war (Dunn, 2023). This dedication to the cause has led the model to lose jobs and partnerships with huge brands such as Dior, creating an abruption to her career (Dunn, 2023). “So many companies stopped working with me, and my friends completely dropped me” (Hadid, 2021). The courage that Bella Hadid has shown throughout the Palestinian suffering and support through her social platforms is an example of the power social media can have in today’s society. The simplicity with which people view social media as not a dominant tool to spread awareness of a cause has proven to be erroneous. Having your voice and a social platform can be a political tool to spread awareness to all generations from any world sector. The importance of understanding the strength of such platforms can be the downfall of others.

Network Engagement:

As we further understand the importance of Web 2.0 technologies, the growth of social platforms has increased awareness of social issues and spread understanding. Another sector we need to investigate is how the innovation of the implications of new social techniques, such as hashtags and social channels, can significantly impact the potential of a message reaching an audience and being effective. Brand awareness refers to consumer recognition and the capability to reach an audience and engage with a particular message (Biglin, 2018). The impact of the effectiveness of a social platform can affect the behaviour and reaction of the community targeted; when we investigate the effect Bella Hadid had on a simple post on her social platform, the effect made significant changes with the support of the people affected by the crisis and created a safe hold for a community to come together and feel more exposed with their expression (Dunn, 2023). Instagram and Twitter are two of the most potent platforms worldwide used for free expression and creating authenticity; this online identity is where people can advocate for social problems and create a stance that makes a significant difference from 20 years ago when social media was not as evolved.

The number of shares can measure the engagement of networks and likes a particular topic is affected by; a simple hashtag can create the notion of spreading awareness more profoundly into the core of the world, developing a powerful tool used in political issues around the world. An example of this is seen through the hashtag #StandWithPalestine; this hashtag has been used by celebrities, politicians, and activists to create a movement within the social media communities to pursue a change in the way the world is proceeding at the moment (Chakraborty, 2023). The hashtag is part of a broader movement to support the Palestinian people and their rights to express self-determination in the conflict against Israel (Chakraborty, 2023). Although the hashtag has created controversy, is said to be biased, and does not express the complexities of the conflict, it remains a powerful tool to raise awareness across the world that did not exist prior. The understanding that social media spreads is detrimental to the outcome of wars; the emergence of these technologies creates more of a difference than ever as more people are becoming aware of the significance of what is happening in the world.

Social Networks After A Disaster:

With the understanding of these topics we have overlooked throughout this text, we begin to understand the importance of technology in today’s technological world. Not only are social platforms used for free expression and a way to spread awareness globally, but they are tools that people can use to reflect on a particular occasion that may have taken place in the past and form a community in which they can express their thoughts internationally. Social platforms such as Twitter and Instagram play a critical role in disaster management and the effect of building a community to help donate to organizations that support these issues. Social media platforms over the past few decades have become one of the main communication channels to spread awareness on a global scale (Acikara, Xia, Tan & Hon, 2023). Social media analytics have now become a tool to measure tourism and hospitality rates, and disaster management is no exception. Through shares and likes, analytics can measure the effectiveness of disaster responses and improve a particular disaster’disaster’s situational awareness (Acikara, Xia, Tan & Hon, 2023).

Looking further into the effectiveness of social media as a tool for disaster management, a vital disaster to underline is the 2016 flood in Louisana that damaged over 60,000 homes. This disaster was one of the worst U.S. disasters after Hurricane Sandy; this led to the importance of social networks and the ability to collect data to create insights into online users’ pausers’ to spread awareness through Facebook and other platforms (Kim & Hastak, 2018). Social media was used to communicate disaster-effective requests to people affected by the disaster and through the sharing and reposting of the worst affected (Kim & Hastak, 2018). This disaster is an example of the power social platforms have when it comes to spreading awareness and creating change within a disaster or problem on a global scale. Comparing this to the Palestinian movement conveys the trend in which social platforms are the new tools for collecting data and spreading awareness in hopes of making a difference in society today.

Misleading Content:

As we raise awareness that social media has the power to spread awareness globally, we also need to look at how there may be cases of information being misleading or false. One downfall that plays a crucial role in misusing social media is false equivalencies (Freelon, Marwick & Daniel, 2020). Online activism is one of the main tools to build a community and create change throughout a disaster or political issue. Still, there are always negatives that come with the positives of online activity. A significant concern for elections, scholars and news media is the problem of misleading and false political content (Freelon, Marwick & Daniel, 2020). Users have the opportunity to post content that may not be literal through the emergence of new technologies such as AI; any person can create false headlines that can be detrimental to anyone. The power of social media can be positive but negative when misused. Through the trends of conspiracy theories, hoaxes and inflammatory opinions, the rise of false information has increased rapidly as more and more people have access to technologies that allow these causes (Freelon, Marwick & Daniel, 2020).

Conclusion:

As we gather all the information overlooked throughout this text, we understand the power social media platforms use when spreading awareness on controversial and political topics. Throughout this text, there is an understanding of several areas in which technologies can be used as a tool to spread awareness on a global scale. The emergence of social media is changing the attitude and behaviour of the youth; different online pages and accounts create a new perception in which political activism can be spread through medians to influence new people to have awareness, such as activism for Palestine by amplifying citizen voices. The sudden emergence of ‘influencing’ has created a path where people can advocate for such issues as activism for Palestine and, through social media technologies, create hashtags that start to trend and spread awareness worldwide (Karamar & Farooq, 2016). A particular person of focus, Bella Hadid, used her online presence to give a voice to the Palestinians and the war that is going on between them and Israel. Great article, I really enjoyed reading this as it is such an important topic.

I had no idea that Bella Hadid shared such powerful thoughts and beliefs to her Instagram. Even a simple post of an aesthetically pleasing cookie can make a difference. It is so important that popular celebrities use their voices to help raise awareness of pressing issues around the world.
I think that lots of people like to use social media as a facade and distraction as to what is happening in our world, so it is beautiful to see such influential people publicly discuss these issues.
I had no idea that social media could be used as an analytical tool to measure disasters, but I have learned a lot from this paper.

The discussion of “fake news” was definitely an issue that needed to be addressed in your paper, as often people only like to discuss the positives in regards to social media.
Do you think there is a way that social media platforms can help to monitor if information is legit or not?
I wonder if something like that were to be introduced and how that would change what/how our brains process new headlines. Maybe humans will become less sceptical and more trustworthy.

If you have time I would appreciate if you could read my paper. Here is the link.

      Hey Poppy!

Thank you so much for reading my paper; I appreciate the feedback and questions you have gathered. In society, it can be hard to separate the truth from the false; it all comes down to the power level a particular source holds and whether or not they have a community that follows it. In a way, most social platforms have a filtering system; therefore, the organisations would have it removed if false information could damage something.

Thanks again! I will also check out your paper 🙂

A well-written article here I enjoyed reading it. I agree with your stance on technologies like social media having the ability to amplify silent voices and allow for those perspectives to be greatly considered. In this day and age, people only choose to subscribe to one perception and don’t consider other factors impacting a situation.

I also like how you addressed social media’s positive impact through Bella Hadid’s activism supporting Palestine. She is one of the very few people with a massive platform utilising it to spread awareness on the genocide in Palestine. It’s interesting how so many of these celebrities with massive platforms and access to immeasurable wealth are choosing to stay silent and carry on with their lives as if a genocide isn’t being broadcasted to them live right on their phones. Like the previous comment stated, a lot of people use social media as a form of escapism to avoid the reality they are living in. So to have someone as influential as Bella Hadid choosing to use her platform and uplift Palestinian voices, and getting shamed for it, is commendable.

One thing I’d like to ask is on the hashtag #StandwithPalestine. You mentioned it “does not express the complexities of the conflict”. I’d like to essentially ask why you think the hashtag does not encompass the complexities of the genocide. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this.

Once again, a very well-written piece!!

      Hey Jorgia,

Thank you for your kind words and feedback; I always appreciate hearing other’s thoughts. For your question about the complexities of the social media hashtag #standwithpalestine and how it was ineffective, these are the thoughts of some fighting for the movement who arent understanding of the power of social media. Sometimes, social media can be viewed and conveyed as loose words thrown around with no actual meaning. These movements are practical and effective tools for communicating change on a global scale, but some people do not think these tools are as effective as they are.

Thanks so much again! I will check out your paper 🙂

The impact of social media on political awareness and activism is a complex and dynamic area of study. It is fascinating to see how social media platforms have transformed the way individuals engage with political issues on a global scale. The discussion on the role of influencers, the use of hashtags, and the practical applications in disaster management highlights the multifaceted nature of social media’s influence.
To enhance the article further, providing additional examples beyond Bella Hadid’s activism could offer a more comprehensive understanding of the diverse ways in which social media is utilized for political advocacy. Incorporating more data-driven insights and practical recommendations could strengthen the credibility and applicability of the content. Additionally, exploring the ethical implications and future trends in leveraging technology for political awareness would enrich the discussion and stimulate further reflection on the implications of online activism.

    Hi,

I thoroughly enjoyed your article on how social media platforms have emerged as powerful tools for raising awareness about social and political issues. It resonated with me because I chose a similar topic for my article. While reading your article, I agreed with many of your viewpoints. Especially on how social media, hashtags, and other affordances can spread awareness and amplify voices on important social and political issues. I also highlighted this point in my article “The Power of Social Media Platforms and Hashtags: During the #FreeBritney movement”.

However, our articles do differ in various aspects. For instance, I focused on a social issue advocating for the human rights of a public persona (Britney Spears). On the other hand, your article explored the political activism of a public persona (Bella Hadid). I like how you went this route in your article, as this is something that I have always liked about public personas on social media platforms. The way that they use their voices and speak up about important issues to advocate for change in a way that they have never been able to do before. It also allows their followers to follow in their idol’s footsteps and advocate for the same issues using their accounts, leading to more recognition of important issues.

Once again, I really enjoyed reading your paper, and if you get a chance, I would really appreciate it if you gave my article a read and offered feedback. https://networkconference.netstudies.org/2024/onsc/4216/the-power-of-social-networking-platforms-and-hashtags-during-the-freebritney-movement/

      Hey Jess,

Thank you for your kind words and feedback about my paper. It will be interesting to read your article and see a different point of view on the topic of the power of social media. In today’s society, social media can be very giving and positive, but it also has very negative connotations, which I feel like you would have explored in your article. I’m very interested in reading your side, as I believe there are several ways in which personas can use the platforms for positivity or be personally affected by them.

Thanks again for the feedback! 🙂

Interesting read particularly around Palestine, a topic that is very much on my mind everyday. I love that you spoke about Bella Hadid, I remember the backlash she received for her support of Palestine. I didn’t realise she included the three love hearts, with the colours representing the Palestinian flag, in her posts. I have seen others across social media use them, I wonder if she was the first one. If so, it clearly shows how an influencer can influence how people use social media. If only her influence had also transferred to world leaders, business and as of late Universities.

Regarding the #StandWithPalestine hashtag I agree with your argument that it is a powerful tool to raise awareness across the world that did not exist prior. Would you say, in addition to raising awareness of the current genocide, it has also been instrumental in many people becoming aware of the history of conflict between Israel and Palestine and the creation of the Israel state?

If you wouldn’t mind could you take a look at my paper? https://networkconference.netstudies.org/2024/onsc/3578/how-yes-and-no-supporters-used-social-media-to-influence-the-indigenous-voice-to-parliament-vote/

      Hey El,

Thank you for taking the time to read my paper and leaving some feedback; it is great to see that you relate to my words and understand what is happening with Palestine. The movement #standwithpalestine is such a powerful tool that not only influencers but everyday people are sharing, and yes, not only has the movement created awareness of the current genocide, but it has also spread awareness of the roots from which the conflict has risen from. Even I didn’t know the severity of the problem until I saw the increase of these words being shared on thousands of pages; if it wasn’t for social media tools being utilised, I don’t believe many people would even have the slightest idea of what is happening between Israel and Palestine.

I will take the time to check out your paper!

Thanks again for your feedback and thoughts 🙂

    Hello,

This paper delves a lot into how social media can be a powerful tool to raise awareness about political issues and facilitating global engagement. I never thought celebrities like Bella Hadid would use her online personas to amplify marginalized voices and spark meaningful conversations about pressing social and political issues.

However, it would be beneficial to delve deeper into strategies for combating misinformation and preserving the integrity of online activism efforts. What specific measures do you believe should be implemented to address the spread of false information and uphold the credibility of social media as a platform for social change?

      Hey Keshini,

Thank you for taking the time to read my paper. I appreciate your words and feedback. It is nice to hear you enjoyed reading my paper about the power of social media tools to raise awareness. I believe there are several ways in which tools can be implemented to stop false information. A way is the filtering system implemented on social media platforms that stops words and inappropriate information from being spread; I think at the end of the day people will always choose to spread false information to get a reaction but how a community reacts to what is being spread will be how we can stop it from happening more often.

Thanks again for your feedback! 🙂

    Interesting read.
When you mention “The understanding that social media spreads is detrimental to the outcome of wars; the emergence of these technologies creates more of a difference than ever as more people are becoming aware of the significance of what is happening in the world.”
When you spoke about the #StandWithPalestine hashtag I found it interesting.
I thought it was great you acknowledged the hashtag isn’t perfect, and has positive and negative impacts on social media.

I wonder what you think of Bella Hadid posting Syrian children when trying to advocate for chidden in Gaza? I know she infamously made this error.

Thank you for reading my article. It’s great to hear your view on the issues I raised in my text. I appreciate you acknowledging some topics I mentioned and how you thought it was effective.

Regarding your question; we are all human, therefore we all make mistakes no one is perfect in how they may approach certain situations, but even speaking upon such an argumentive topic makes you an influential person. In this case, Bella Hadid may have posted Syrian children when trying to advocate for chidden in Gaza, but we all make mistakes, and the direction in which she approaches these movements tells you that her heart is in a good place.

Thanks again! I will check out your paper as well 🙂

    Hi there!

I thought your paper did a fantastic job covering the way social media and online platforms have developed and adapted over the years, providing a plethora of newfound opportunities and tools for individuals and organisations to engage with global audiences at an unprecedented scale.

While your paper rightly identifies the vast new power and global reach of social media platforms and online networks, you also identify the risks associated with this tool enabling unfiltered freedom of speech and explore the issues with the spread of misinformation and content intended to mislead and deceive broader audiences. On this topic, I can highly recommend a conference paper by Zaneampho, titled “Navigating the Minefield: The Proliferation of Misinformation on Facebook” which explores these very same issues, their prevalence and the impact it has on a global audience. (https://networkconference.netstudies.org/2024/csm/4330/navigating-the-minefield-the-proliferation-of-misinformation-on-facebook/)

What are your thoughts with regards to placing the onus the social media platforms and online networks to act as a mediator and intervene when misinformation is being spread on their platform?

Interested to hear your views on this 😊

    All the best,

    Mat

      Hey Mathew,

Thank you for your kind words and feedback. I appreciate your thoughts and comments on how I approached the topic of the power of social media as a tool of awareness. Misinformation is one of the biggest reasons for arguments and misunderstandings of global issues. I think that online platforms do have the power to act as mediators and create clear and informative answers to these problems as they evolve and build stronger communities.

Thanks again! I will check out your paper 🙂

    Hello,

I really enjoyed reading your paper and found your topic very interesting. It is interesting to see how social media is constantly evolving creating voices for everyone. In a world where there is so much censorship it is interesting to see the power of freedom of speech as you mentioned in your paper. You mentioned that online personalities like Bella Hadid have used their platforms to speak up for change. The question I have is do you think that we should be listening to celebrities views on social and political views even if they are not educated on the topics? Just because of their platforms and the audiences they can reach are they the ones we should look for to take charge and to make a change? Im interested to hear your thoughts.

I wrote my paper on a similar topic based on censorship in the media and specifically Joe Rogans impact. Please check it out and comment if you get the chance https://networkconference.netstudies.org/2024/ioa/3687/not-your-average-joe/

      Hey Jack,

Thank you for taking the time to read my paper. I appreciate your feedback and your kind words. I found the question you asked very interesting and strong. Should we listen to people just because they have a large following? It all comes down to the particular person you are listening to. People aren’t just going to listen to anyone, but Bella Hadid doesn’t just share her own words but raises awareness of other people sharing their knowledge. Some influencers misuse their platforms, but they are now called out for it; it all comes down to what is being said and how they share it with the world.

Thanks again for reading my paper! I will check out yours as well 🙂
