Introduction

Launched in 2017, the TikTok platform has brought a major turn in the world of social media platforms. Providing features that other platforms could not offer such as content in the form of video format only, 15-60 seconds of videos created by its users, having its own editing tools, and the use of a vast number of filters. These features have made it achieve a success of 800 million of active users on a daily basis and a download count exceeding 2 billion. Being accessible in 150 countries, it has won the hearts of teens and young adults (Li et al., 2021). TikTok has gained an exponential popularity due to its feature of a proprietary recommendation system that customizes the “For You Page” interface to turn the user addicted to scrolling on the platform. There is an AI System that analyses the interests of the users and shows related content every time the user connects to the platform. Algorithmic calculations are being done by the AI system so as to provide the best service in terms of content to satisfy the want of the user specifically. It cannot be denied that sound and music are the core elements that make the true essence of TikTok. They have a crucial role in building up livelihood online communities (Zeng et al., 2021). TikTok is well aware of the importance of music in the life of each individual so how far can TikTok contribute to the music industry in terms of discoverability and introducing new artists?

License & Revenue

All artists for many decades have had the same struggle and that is money. Certain platforms do pay, and some don’t, so certainly do feel discouraged because they are not getting their daily bread out of it and can barely afford a proper living. Spotify, Deezer, and Apple Music are among the prime leader in terms of musical platforms. Each has its features and rights that are exclusively reserved for them. To access those rights many artists have agreed on those terms but turn out to be unprofitable as they are being paid less and they are being exposed to a large audience as they are ditching a certain part of their fanbase who cannot afford to pay.  Spotify and Apple Music are examples where the income is very low and not worth signing for compared to other platforms (Mourelatos & Mourelatos, 2022). TikTok has another method of paying for artists. An artist does get their revenue depending on the calculations done for royalties and the number of contents made on the artist’s music. This concept is revolutionary compared to other music streaming platforms that lay on the number of streams. TikTok has lately announced that it has sealed a licensing deal in mutually sharing music with the top 3 musical labels such as Warner, Sony, and Universal Music Group. This deal will make artists to expand their visibility and they will get more income for the artists and for the TikTok company as it will have more music to add to its library (Kaye et al., 2021). The benefit of TikTok is that the distribution is done freely without any fee from the artists or from the user. Artists have now made it a must to be on TikTok in order to leave or imprint their trace in the mind of the current generation as the other musical platforms are becoming outmoded (Li et al., 2021). People nowadays are living in an era where it is becoming more and more difficult for people to earn money, TikTok has understood the problem and made life easier for these people thus outlining TikTok as a launching platform for artists who want to earn money. In terms of licensing, there would be copyright in the songs that they will produce which is advantageous for the artists (Salsabila et al., 2021).  In this paragraph, TikTok provides a facility payment that is more free, accessible, and more profitmaking for the artists and for the company which converges towards the discovery of new artists in the musical sphere.

Visibility

TikTok has known an unprecedented popularity, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic when the number of users has doubled due to the lack of entertainment in their life changing the way consume music. Concerts and musical album releases have been postponed which has been a great disappointment for the fans and caused artists to be jobless. TikTok had become a trendy app and artists have decided to exploit it for their own benefits. It has been noted that popular European artists have been using TikTok to increase their presence during this hard time (Mourelatos & Mourelatos, 2022). Many musical Artists have adopted this new way and started to share musical content on this platform. They have seen their popularity and exposure triple and have a high streaming value. New talents have emerged in the musical era creating a fierce competition in terms of viewers. Lil Nas X is one example where this popular artist organized a series of Roblox concerts inviting millions of fans which has been streamed on the platform TikTok. Mark Soriano is a musician and has been a revelation to the whole world, he used the TikTok platform to express his creativity which has successfully achieved. At that time there was a great demand by fandoms around the world to live stream or to create virtual. TikTok has heard those grievances and has used the latest technology to virtually recreate a virtual concert streaming around the world at the same time. concerts (Situmorang, 2021). In terms of fanbase, TikTok has no reproach on that as for every artist their fanbase has known an exponential rise in terms of listeners. From emerging artists to popular artists, TikTok has assured exposure to the musical content and has promoted it in a rapid way, it has offered a vast variety of music tracks free to use for users to use to make their content during the pandemic. TikTok has offered a new way for fans to still maintain their ties with their favorite artists (Wang et al., 2019). This paragraph shows how TikTok has given visibility to musical artists, kept their musical careers going on, and the growth of their fanbase.

Trend

Today’s generation is one that follows where the tendency of the people tends to go to in terms of fashion, technology, or even way of living. In this case, TikTok has become the trendiest social media application that has changed the way people interact online by proposing users to engage in dance challenges using a library of sounds, songs, and filters. In contrary to other social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram, TikTok has a higher growth rate due to its interface which is much more practical to use, share and create content than its predecessor in terms of video format sharing (Sarwatay et al., 2022). TikTok unknowingly has made possible the revival of songs where oldies and forgotten songs have resurfaced making the generation Z and the upcoming to discover it.  These songs have been combined with dance choreography like Say So, Renegade, and Cannibal. TikTok users have started to use these old songs and mimic these dance movements which gradually became viral. These artists within days appear on the top 10 charts of worldwide music of the most listened to music. This case is applicable to emerging artists like for example Addison Rae in her song “Obsessed” which has created a buzz on the TikTok platform (Cervi, 2021). TikTok makes users discover various types of genres and moods. This popularizes the emerging artists making their music artwork available for TikTok to use and discover. “The Ratatouille” is an example where the music was redone with a choreography imitated by millions of TikTok users making the song go viral. The revival of this funny song was initiated by a TikTok user bringing a feeling of nostalgia and the artists have regained popularity. Different users use the same song which leads to a chain effect that it has on the musical charts is that on commercial radios and other music streaming platforms, they are being played on a daily basis as people have been addicted to them. Once a user hears a piece of music on TikTok they quickly search for it on the internet and download it making them fond of the song. Songs can become popular, and the post effects it has on the mind of a person after being exposed to a style of music (Gagliardi, 2022).  One must be aware of the latest trend and be able to adapt to it. TikTok has understood the functioning of this new system and has tried its best in developing an algorithm that will make the artist’s song to appear in TikTok users’ interface promoting their song and making them become a trend among the TikTok community first then to people outside the platform (Klug et al., 2021). Songs can go viral and be reborn within seconds if they are well-interpreted by the TikTok community. Musical artists through TikTok have the opportunity to shine and make their music become a hit as it can be seen in this paragraph.

Conclusion

To conclude this paper, it can be seen that TikTok has completely shaped the world of social media platforms with its unique features. TikTok has already discerned its true value in contrast to the four dominant ones, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. TikTok already planned its strategy in terms of content, interface, and system so as not to copy from its predecessors. This strategy has perfectly been executed and TikTok has now reached among the top 3 of the best social media platforms. During the Covid-19 pandemic, TikTok has been a great help in entertaining all age groups saving the people’s mental health, and keeping people happy through musical content. Most youngsters agree that they prefer using the TikTok platform and the majority of the songs and genres they listened to come from it. Throughout this paper, a deep analysis was done to show how TikTok has contributed to the success of certain artists by revealing their dark horses and launching their careers at the international level. TikTok has fulfilled the need and wants of artists and its users in terms of license deals, revenue, visibility, and trend. Artists have now realized the importance of TikTok and in the future will think twice before quitting the TikTok platform one day. TikTok will continue to innovate in the music industry as TikTok will become lifeless and boring without any music or sound. TikTok is only limited to music artists only but also to vloggers and content creators that another side of TikTok that must be explored.

    Hello Chandishi,

This is a very interesting topic , as this one of the applications which is probably most used by everyone sometime throughout the day,

I find your research very interesting, and i enjoyed reading your paper.

I would like to ask; Do you think that due to its algorithmic structure that ones Tiktok feed would be providing a hierarchy for promoting top musical artists on people’s feed, but how would inaugural Music artists even have a chance to promote their music if their competitors are being displayed first ?

      Hi Liam,
Thank you for reading my paper. You have raised an important point, let me tell you that indeed TikTok do have an algorithmic structure that has already been predefined. There is no such hierarchy in promoting musical artists as TikTok is a platform that promotes equality and every action done on the platform is computerized there is no chance of biasness.
New emerging artists in order to differentiate themselves from their competitors they must use keywords, text-overlays and hashtag which will make their music more visible as these words will make their music easier to find and remember.
Another aspect is in terms of device settings where language, device type and country setting play a crucial role as TikTok will make the musical content available to users using these similar based settings.

      Kind regards,

        Hey Chandishi,

Thank you for clearing my question, it is much clearer in my head now, I guess it can also be done with the uniqueness of the artist, for example the artist JVKE famous for Golden Hour, fame started from Tik Tok. I presume they must find creative ways with their words to get their music out there

    Hi Chandishi!

Love this trend on TikTok in the promotion and discoverability of artists. It reminds me of the Soundcloud era of artist discoverability.

My question stems from the partnership that TikTok have signed with 3 major labels. Do you think that this extends the problem that many indie artists face in that labels control most of the distribution across digital media platforms now onto TikTok? There has also been reports of industry plants being “discovered” on the app who were in reality, already signed. Do you think this problem will grow as TikTok becomes bigger or will the power still remain in the hands of the artists themselves?

Would love to hear your thoughts on these prospects,

    Ning

      Hi Ning,
Thank you for reading my paper. Labels do not have control the monopole over digital media platforms. They do have a partnership which legally allows their artists to publish their musical content under their label. Labels cannot legally manipulate digital platform in their favor as certain platforms do have certain ethics to follow and rules to abide. It can be denied that there are cases where some artists who have already been signed and find their exposure and popularity boosted with the TikTok Platform. TikTok being a popular app makes musical content go three times more viral than any other app. As mentioned in the paper, old songs which were once popular in the past have become trendy in today’s era making the youth of today discover the masterpiece. This will not be an issue for TikTok as it has already set its algorithm for every user and musical artists by providing them with the same exposure online and sharing features. The real power will always remain in the hands of artists always as they must be able to adhere to the latest trend in terms of Hashtag and the music style they want to deliver to their audience as TikTok will only act as the medium of sharing those content.

      Kind Regards,

    Hi Chandishi,

This was an interesting read, thank you for sharing!

With artists using TikTok and utilizing the platform’s affordances to promote their music, do you think there is a lot of competition for newer artists to be discovered? We have seen a number of newer artists’ fame rise in a short amount of time from just a song or two posted as short TikTok videos. TikTok is a great promotional platform, especially for artists and their music but I believe it’s quite difficult for every artist to shine and get the spotlight. Of course it would be heavily reliant on consumers and the kind of music they would listen to.

    Keen to hear your thoughts.

    Thank you,
    Korina

    Hi Korina,

Thanks for reading my paper and am glad you find it interesting.
Let me say that yes there is a tough competition in the world of music, and it applies on all platforms whether it is Spotify or YouTube.
On TikTok the competition is not easy for every artist being a social media platform that is being watched by millions of people at a time.
Newer artists it is even harder to make them discover, and they have to work as hard and double compared to well-known artists. Some new artists do get lucky to have their song going viral in just a few days of posting. What can really differentiate new artists from known ones is to bring their own personal touch and the true essence of music in their song, this concoction blended together will differentiate the artists from other ones. I completely agree on the fact that it will depend on the kind of music that the Musico Phila will listen to. Every artist will have their chance to rise, all will depend on the effort, content and the quality of music they produced.

    Kind regards,

    Hello Chandishi,

    Interesting paper to read!

In the conclusion you mentioned that besides music performers, TikTok offers vloggers and content creators a place to share their skills and creativity and that it would be a good idea to look at this aspect of TikTok. Why according to you

What are some of the non-music related content that can be found on TikTok and why is it important to explore this side of the platform?
And, how has TikTok grown to include vloggers and other content producers in addition to music artists, and what effect has this had on the platform’s popularity?

    Thank you in advance,

    Emma

      Hi Emma,
Thanks for taking your precious time in commenting on my paper. As you know TikTok is the trendiest social media platform among all generation age. TikTok has recently made a deal with the video editor application allowing it’s both users to utilize content and tools from both applications to make the best content out of it. Like any other social media platform, TikTok has made itself unique by taking this step. TikTok is a platform full of colors and medias, there are different content such as gaming, vlog, Product and services advertising, live shows and many more. It is crucial to explore this side of TikTok as it brings diversity and breaks monotony of the for you page. Different users have different tastes, so it enhances their online experience on the platform. TikTok is a social media platform that adapts to people tastes and wants, it evolves alongside with its users. The generation of vloggers has shaped today’s world and will continue to create an impact. In terms of content producers, TikTok needs a consequent amount of content to deliver to its audience, so it will do anything to make its user produce more content from sound to visual, movement or non-movement scene.
These small changes and producing content bring attracts more and more people on the platform which increases popularity. One example Youtubers have shifted to TikTok platform as it is more fun interactive and more exposure within seconds. This shift brings YouTube users to the TikTok platform as they want to follow their idol and do not want to lose any content from them. The same applies for other social media platform such as Facebook or Instagram.

I hope this explanation was enough for you to understand the function of the TikTok platform.

      Kind Regards,
      C.Seedoyal

Hi Chandishi, very interesting paper to read.

I agree with you that TikTok is helping immensely in promoting music of upcoming artists especially through trends. However, musical artists are going a step further by paying TikTok creators to create trends or use their music in their videos to promote their work and in the hope of their music going viral. Which is actually working as most music that are going viral on TikTok were because of TikTok celebrities. As a result, what happens to the new artists who have great talents but have no capacity to do the same? Because the only way for a new artist’s music to succeed on TikTok is for it to go viral, what if new artists are struggling to go viral due to lack of means?

I would like to hear your thoughts on this,
    Khavish.

    1. Chandishi.Seedoyal Avatar
      Chandishi.Seedoyal

      Hi Khavish,
Thanks for reading my paper. There are cases where artists have paid and found their exposure and popularity boosted with the TikTok Platform. Based on my research done, I can assure that artists who do not pay TikTok benefit from the algorithm of the application as it provides exposure in for you page, there is a small gap between these two. The algorithm of TikTok provides equity the maximum it can to the TikTok community. The key for artists who do not have means to pay is to create more and more content, it is a counter measure to achieve success and popularity. These artists who do not have the money to pay can go viral. In general TikTok remains a social media platform that will always promote unity, equity and modernity.

I hope this answer was enough for you.

      Kind regards,

    Hi Chandishi,

Your paper was a very interesting reed and I agree that TikTok is an invaluable tool these days in promoting music. In your essay you mention that TikTok has signed licensing agreements with major labels such as Warner, Sony and Universal. How do these licensing deals benefit the artist and TikTok? Do you think that these licensing deals influence the algorithm and push certain videos over others if they have a song that one of the labels wants to push?

TikToks ability to revive old songs is such an interesting one. From your research have you found any benefits other than popularity that artists gain when a song is revived on TikTok? Do their song sales spike? Does the artists other music benefit too?

Whilst your essay focuses on the music industry, you touched on how other content creators such as vloggers (who are typically on YouTube) can benefit from TikTok. Do you think that TikTok is taking over other platforms? Do you think that YouTube will cease to exist or the two platforms will exist together? I know a lot of the content on YouTube is replicated onto TikTok!

    Hi Nicholas,
Thanks for finding my paper interesting. I am very happy to see that you have lots of questions related to my topic. In terms of licensing as mentioned in paper for the artist’s he gains more exposure from common users, it appears more often on users’ feed. The artist’s music has been popularized. For the TikTok social media platform, it gets music to freely use and for users to use it also. Yes, licensing deals do influence the for you page algorithm where you have mentioned in your comment. We live in a world where everything has a price but there is other free-cost way to achieve the same exposure and popularity. Based on my research done, I can clearly say that both sales and artists name do shine. The revival of songs can become a worldwide trend. Ava Max is an example where she has brought the revival of old songs. The artists have gain popularity and encouragement to continue their musical career. TikTok has overcome all existing social media platforms and will continue to reach the apex of popularity, users and download. Based on research done on my paper that both social media platforms have their own users, and they are both consumed differently. One example is where one is made for longer video and one for shorter video. Although they do have some similarities but they both remain crucial platforms in the daily life of people.

I hope I have answered all your questions.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Chandishi,

Overall, the essay offers a perceptive examination of how TikTok has changed the music business by giving up-and-coming artists opportunities and increasing their visibility. It explains the licencing and monetization methods that help artists and emphasises TikTok’s distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other social media platforms. The study also looks at how TikTok affects the popularity and comeback of songs, drawing in a variety of users.

There are a few points in the essay, though, that may be expanded upon or clarified. The specific licencing arrangements between TikTok and major record labels, Warner, Sony, and Universal Music Group, for instance, might be discussed in more detail. Exploring the long-term impact of TikTok’s dominance on the music industry and how it might influence music consumption in the future would also be interesting.

The following queries are raised by the essay:

    1. How do the royalty- and content-based income models of TikTok vary from those of other music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music?
    2. Could you elaborate on the licencing agreement that TikTok has with the major three music labels (Warner, Sony, and Universal Music Group)? How does this partnership benefit TikTok as well as the artists?
    3. Are there any well-known artists who have found major success on TikTok, and how has the platform affected their professional development?

    Kind regards,
    Maleeha
