Abstract:

This paper examines the role of Facebook in the development of communities. Facebook is an online social media and networking service founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. Originally created for university students to find one another, it has now expanded into one of the largest social networking sites on the internet. Accessible via any device, Facebook has over three billion monthly users worldwide. Through the use of services such a groups, messenger and pages, the platform has allowed individuals to create and stay connected to their communities. Overall, this paper discusses the features of Facebook and how they develop and nurture our sense of community in the modern world.

Introduction:

Facebook has allowed us to build more communities in our every day lives. Communities have existed and evolved over time as the world has developed. “Communities have developed over time from small close-knit groups where everyone knew each other intimately to the vast communities of today where members can global” (Matisi, 2021, para. 2). Facebook claims that community is at the core app experience. A handful of people believe that communities and relationships were ‘better’ prior to social media and technology (Hampton & Wellman, 2018), but with proven studies it shows that the rise of the digital world has allowed us to feel more connected with others across multiple communities. Prior to technology and the expansion Facebook, the only relationships people had were typically limited to the general proximity of where they lived, worked, studied and congregated (Dhaliwal 2022). With over 5 billion downloads, Facebook has 2.9 billion monthly active users and is one of the largest social media networks on the internet (Iqbal 2023). Now, we can join a community on Facebook by simply joining a group, connecting on messenger or liking a page. Facebook allows every individual to feel included within any aspect of their life, whether it be neighbourhood groups, stay at home mum pages, online study groups or even family group chats. “The study of community is not about the study of one type of place or one type of bond, but rather the study of variation in context, communication, and technology” (Hampton & Wellman, 2018). Facebook is a key aspect in todays society to maintain and establish strong communities as it empowers us to express our desires, thoughts and feelings through speech, text, images, videos and performance.

Discussion:

1. Communication researches noticed a large shift in communication practice and the developments of “social networks”, which turned from face-to-face interactions among small communities into large digital connections (Soukup 2018). In 2010 Facebook created a feature called “groups’ which allowed private groups to be made and give individuals the opportunity to connect with others over topics, interests or discussions in a private online group setting. This can differentiate from music, memes, travel, politics or even property. Facebook (2020) states, “Groups are a place to communicate about shared interests with certain people.” Facebooks goal when creating this feature was “to grow diverse perspectives and increase authentic conversations across Public Groups, while giving admins powerful new tools to keep their groups safe and the quality of conversations high” (Facebook 2020). The groups feature on Facebook allows us to create an online community with existing offline communities. Many students create and join ‘groups’ as a way to share, engage and educate each other when they cannot physically connect in-person. In the 2016-2017 academic year, 160 second-year medical students enrolled at UAMS, joined a Facebook discussion group. “Overall, students strongly agreed that the Facebook discussion group fostered better rapport with faculty, helped content learning, and improved emotional well-being. Also, they felt more comfortable seeking academic help after using the discussion group. They reported a slight preference for Facebook over email as a medium for asking questions, but no preference for either as a medium for distributing announcements. Students overwhelmingly recommended that the discussion group should be continued in future years” (Henry et al., 2020, para. 3). Facebook groups can also be helpful for individuals in the creative industries like musicians, artists or dancers. By creating a group it allows creatives to connect with others who create the same art form. Individuals can share tips, tricks and opportunities to one another virtually, from all corners of the world. Those interested in travel can also become apart of a community through Facebook groups where individuals can share travel advice, ask questions or recommendations. ‘Bali Bogans’, is a well known Facebook group with over 349,000 Australian members that are share the same interest of travelling to Bali. This group has become well known to Australians travelling to Bali and creates an open forum for individuals to ask questions on anything regarding their travels. It has also created a space for local businesses to connect with Australians travelling to their country and provide a ‘Bali Bogan’ approved experience. This group has created a community of Australians who all share the common interest of travel to Bali and are willing to support and assist each other to have a wonderful experience. Facebook Groups provide a place to create a community where you can connect and communicate with people who share common interests.

2. New communication technologies make instant and consistent contact possible. In the past, “social ties and communities fizzled due to life events such as moving, graduating school, finishing studies, changing jobs, going travelling or getting married” (Hampton & Wellman, 2018). Facebook give us the chance to stay in contact with individuals from past or existing communities that may have been lost due to life changes, but it also provides us with the opportunity to connect with people from across the globe that share common interests, therefore enhancing the overall number of a communities we are in. Created in 2011, Facebooks feature ‘Messenger’ has created a way for individuals to remain connected in real time. It allows users to connect seamlessly through text, picture and audio. Messenger allows you to message both one-on-one and in groups, it also includes GIFS, stickers and emojis (Moreau 2021). Media files like photo and video are easily sent to one another and audio and video calls can be made via Messenger. The Facebook service also allows you to play games with other users, send money and even send your location. This feature has made it a lot easier to stay connected to friends and family, colleagues and acquaintances within your communities. Prior to Facebook and digital technology, if we wanted to stay connected with others we would have to know their phone number and even before phones, we had to know their address to send letters in order to stay connected. It would be luck of the draw on whether someone was available to answer a phone call and would take weeks or even months to receive and respond to a letter. Now, with modern technology and Messenger, it has become easier to stay connected to others in our community, knowing when they’re active online and the ability to receive a response within seconds. A community chat is a public chat created specifically for a Facebook group, so real-time conversations with other group members can seamlessly happen. Many groups across Facebook including ‘Bali Bogans’ include this feature which allows travellers in Bali to chat in real time with other travellers that are also in Bali and help one another out with any issues, queries or suggestions. This can be super helpful in certain situations that need an immediate response or urgent assistance. Instant messaging platforms like Messenger make it easier for individuals to stay connected to their personal and online communities in real-time no matter their location across the globe.

3. Prior to the digital world, news-boards and newspapers were a place to share business or personal updates and information. This was a way people could connect with their customers or fans without face-to-face contact. Social media platforms like Facebook provide a powerful tool for businesses to engage with their customers and community through text, images, videos, sounds, stories, posts and live streams. Facebook (n.d.) states that, “Pages are places on Facebook where artists, public figures, businesses, brands, organisations and charities can connect with their fans or customers. When someone likes or follows a Page on Facebook, they can start seeing updates from that Page in their Feed”. People tend to join communities that they trust and align with their values, something that has relatability to their own personal lives or preferences. Much like a personal Facebook page, Pages provide a place where people can share an idea, product or service and others can engage with the content that is shared or posted. They can engage through liking the posts, sharing them on their own personal pages and even commenting along with people who share the same interest that the page promotes. Pages creates a platform for a community of people to engage and connect on similarities. Social media “supports the exchange of ideas and information to create and facilitate communities” (Picard 2015). The ‘Bali Bogans’ group allows pages on Facebook to share and promote their business through the group. It allows business owners to share and connect with a community of people that may be interested in their product or service when arriving in Bali. It ultimately creates more communities as it connects the individuals with other people outside of the ‘Bali Bogans’ group that also share an interest in a certain product or service within Bali. Facebook Pages reintroduce multidirectional communication which allows us to discuss, debate, share and exchange information.

Conclusion:

Facebook has opened up avenues for communities to unite from all around the world, bringing people together with common interests and real life connections. Communities have always existed, from sitting around the fire and engaging through food, music and dance to now sitting online and chatting with strangers over similar interests, only the structure has changed and developed with the times (Matisi 2021). Matthews (2016) states, “Social connections and communication that were previously only possible at a local level, or that were limited by telephone and postal services, could now occur instantly over vast distances”. Facebook allows people to create and nurture communities in real time through their features like Groups, Messenger and Pages. It provides a platform for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through text, image and videos, from personal interests to political views. ‘Bali Bogans’ is the perfect example where over 350,000 Australians connect through Facebook to share their travel experiences in Bali with a community of people that share the same interest of travelling to popular holiday destination. “Social media has contributed positively to the fostering of strong communities, creating diverse and widespread networks and feelings of belonging within those communities by allowing people to communicate freely on multiple levels through a simple and efficient means of communication” (Matisi 2021). Facebook is a universal platform that enables individuals to unite together and create a virtual community through online communication.

    Hi Kyah,

Thanks for exploring various Facebook features such as Groups, Messenger, and Pages, and for discussing how they can help individuals foster and maintain connections with their communities. It really is a testament to the power of social media platforms in shaping our social relationships and sense of belonging in this digital age. What do you think is the impact of social media, such as Facebook, on personal privacy and data security in shaping modern communities?

    Best wishes

      Hey Yiyun,

Thank you for reading my paper! I am aware social media has negative impacts on personal privacy and data security. Every person who uses social media leaves a digital footprint but even just using the internet alone, you are leaving traces behind. If you are online shopping, using emails or even just googling something, our personal privacy and data can be taken purely from the websites and devices we use. Unfortunately in the society we live in, breaches will occur and the chance of our personal information unwillingly being shared around the globe is inevitable. But I do think that it is a risk greater than just social media alone and is a universal issue within our digital world. There are defiantly security measures that the social media sites can take to make sure our privacy is protected and ways of informing us of where our information is going when we sign up to these platforms.

      Thanks,
      Kyah

        Hi Kyah,

Thank you for your reply! Digital networks indeed expose personal privacy to the public. As a Chinese, my personal private information such as my phone number and address is very transparent in the Chinese digital network. Whereas Western societies may be more privacy-conscious. For example, Medibank was previously hacked to reveal its customers’ private information, which had a huge impact and also pushed the Australian government to amend its privacy laws. Do you think privacy breaches will get better or worse in the future under these circumstances?

        Cheers!

    Hello Kyah,

    Dear

Your essay on the importance of Facebook in the creation of communities is well-organized and insightful. Your explanation of Facebook groups, which have allowed people to connect over shared interests and even academic pursuits, was very interesting to me. However, I’m curious about your perspectives on the potentially harmful consequences of social media on community development. Have you considered how social media could lead to more polarization and echo chambers? In its entirety, excellent work!

    Regards,
    Dushena.

      Hi Dushena,

Thanks for reading my paper and for your comments! There are potentially harmful consequences of social media on community development. Having communities on social media does defiantly take away the key aspects of face to face relations and the importance of human contact within our communities. It also adds a risk factor for individuals joining and being exposed to communities that they may never have if it wasn’t for social media. But I do believe having the opportunity to connect and network with people globally in multiple communities from all different backgrounds, ideas, beliefs and religions can open up new ideas, point of views and skills that may never have been possible prior to social media and the digital world.

      Thanks,
      Kyah

    Hi Kyah,

The paper makes the case that Facebook has made it possible for international groups to interact. However, it highlights a crucial issue: What are the possible negative effects of over-dependence on a single platform, like Facebook, for community building? Does this dependency limit access for people who are not a part of the Facebook ecosystem and hamper diversity?

Although Facebook has clearly helped link individuals around the world, relying too heavily on one platform has drawbacks as well. First off, relying only on Facebook might unintentionally reduce diversity by fostering echo chambers, where people mostly connect with others who share their opinions and are less exposed to those who hold different ones. This might obstruct the development of varied and inclusive communities, which are necessary for encouraging insightful debate and learning from many viewpoints.

Second, relying solely on Facebook may erect obstacles to participation for those who opt not to or are unable to use the site for a variety of reasons. This feature of exclusion can further marginalize existing disadvantaged populations and obstruct equal access to opportunities for community formation.

It is vital to understand the possible repercussions of relying too much on a single platform, such as Facebook, for community involvement. In order to ensure diversity, inclusion, and wider access, it may be helpful to investigate alternate platforms or use a multi-platform strategy. This will enable communities to flourish outside of the confines of any one ecosystem.

I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on this.

    Regards,
    Shane

    Hi Kyah,

Nice paper, I do see the benefits of such in our modern world especially during Covid times. However do you think that some other aspects of Facebook such as the ‘like’ feature and posting mindlessly about what one is doing; promotes a competitive space and make others feel like they are less than? Do you think that although messaging can be instant and highly accessible it differs in its ‘quality’? I’d like to hear your thoughts; I think people need to know the dangers of these platforms so they can be aware of their detriments.

    1. Kyah.Thomson Avatar

Thankyou for reading my paper Callum! Social media defiantly benefitted and nurtured our communities during the Covid period. I do see a point of concern with the ‘like’ button and mindless posting but I can also see the benefits of this as it promotes creative freedom and ability to speak ‘whats on our mind.’ I think in the earlier days of Facebook this may have been more a concern but now with other platforms on the rise such as Instagram and tiktok, I do believe these platforms create more a competitive space than Facebook does. In my personal opinion I think Facebook is a place for people to keep in contact with friends, family and collegues and also join groups that promote their personal interests, hobbies or beliefs. When you ask about the instant messaging.. what exactly do you mean when asking about the quality? I think Facebook messenger is the same as any text messaging provider but it just offers a place for people to communicate and engage in one spot instead of jumping between ‘apps’ or ‘websites’ to communicate.
      Cheers,

    Hey Kyah,

Thanks for sharing your paper. As an avid Facebook user I found it very interesting. I know from my own experiences that Facebook has definitely made it much easier for my business to conduct business. Your example of ‘Bali Bogans’ reminds me of a group ‘Tomorrowland Aussies’ where Australians travelling to the Belgium festival connect with each other and meet up at the festival.

With all the research into mental health decline associated with social media platforms like Facebook, do you think that overall the cons outweigh the pros that a powerful platform like Facebook bring?

Do you think Facebook and other social media platforms should be filtering and censoring information that it’s users post or should the platform be a place for free speech?

    Nicholas

    1. Kyah.Thomson Avatar
      Kyah.Thomson

      Hey Nicholas,

I appreciate you taking the time to read my paper and i’m glad you have positive experiences with Facebook. There are defiantly many travel related communities on Facebook that i’m sure anyone travelling to any event or location can find a sense of community through the platform.
I do think there are many cons to the use of social media platforms but I believe if the cons outweighed the pros, then no one would use them. Society uses Facebook because of the many beneficial features it offers for us to stay connected to our communities within the Digital world. There is defiantly a lot of unnecessary and inappropriate content that is posted to Facebook and not all the groups on the platform are positive, there are defiantly minority groups that can be hateful or disrespectful. I have seen groups on Facebook where people are shaming celebrities, ex-partners, religions, cultures ect, and even people commenting on posts just giving hate due to their freedom of speech.
Although freedom of speech doesn’t always bring a positive aspect to the platform I do think it wonderful that there are platforms like Facebook where we can vocalise our opinions or beliefs. For so many years freedom of speech was taken from society and in many parts of the world, individuals still do not have a voice. Facebook and social media can put in tools to filter and censor information but then it takes away the aspect of having the platform as a place to speak freely. So many minority groups use Facebook as a way to vocalise the issues they face and expose the rest of society to problems they deal with. Overall, people have been fighting for freedom of speech and still are fighting for it – but now it’s available people want it to be monetized.

      Thanks,
      Kyah

    Hi Kyah,
Thanks for your paper. Overall, Facebook offers a numbers of tools and features to help individuals and glow communities on it, likes Facebook groups, Pages, Events and even Lives. These are all can let users connect each other, to support what they agreed. Can you provide more examples of successful community development on Facebook?
    Thanks for hearing my comment.

      Hey Longhin,
Thanks for reading my paper and engaging with the debate. When asking for examples of successful community development, I’m assuming you’re asking for more examples of communities developed through Facebook? There are many large groups with over millions of community members as well as small groups with five to ten individuals that make up a community. Examples of larger communities on Facebook groups include; ‘Our Evergreen Bangladesh’, 6.2 million Bangladeshis discussing appreciation of their country as well as national matter and culture, ‘Netflix recommendations’, 4.5 million people discussing and providing recommendations of films and tv shows to watch, and ‘Australian Made Products’, 1.7 million people in a group sharing products that are made in Australia and Australian brands marketing their products. You also have the small groups like; ‘Canva Design Community’ with 290 thousand group members that share tips and tricks on how to use the website, ‘Girls in Bali’, 24 thousand girls that all joined the group as they wish to share their experience with other females or provide recommendations and support to one another, and ‘Autism Spectrum Disorder Support Group’, 8 thousand members that share resources to support those living with Autism or people who know someone with Autism that they wish to support. These are just a few of the many community developments on Facebook.
      Cheers,
      Kyah

I think your exploration of Facebook as a tool for community building is really intriguing. The way you’ve broken it down into features like Groups, Messenger, and Pages is a great approach and made it easy to follow.

I do have a couple of suggestions. While you’ve done a fantastic job covering the positive impacts of Facebook on communities, it might also be worthwhile to consider the flipside. For instance, the issue of echo chambers and the role Facebook might play in polarising communities could add another dimension to your discussion.

Overall, your paper provides a great overview of Facebook’s role in community building!

      Hey Milkias,
Thankyou for reading my paper and for providing feedback. After reading the other comments, the issue of echo chambers and social security are also major factors when using Facebook as a way to build communities. Providing more information of the negatives effects on communities with Facebook would have defiantly added more depth to my discussion and I very much appreciate your feedback.
      Thanks,

    Hi Kyah,
This is a great relevant topic and you’ve made great points.
Regarding these concepts of digital communities on social media, I see some people argue that this is making people more connected and social, while others argue that it is distancing people and only feeding more shallow relationships.
What do you think of this argument?

    Hi Kyah

I like your paper and agree that Facebook plays a significant role in keeping communities connected, instantaneously. It’s quite amazing. One example I can think of is remote communities across Australia who use Facebook and other platforms to stay connected to family and friends who would ordinarily not be able to see one another very often, but can stay connected every day, virtually.

Do you think this is worth researching further aswell?

    Hi Kyah,

This essay offers a thorough analysis of Facebook’s function in the formation and upkeep of communities. It looks at how Facebook’s tools, including groups, messenger, and pages, have made it possible for people to interact with others who have similar interests and build online communities. In the essay, the advantages of these online communities are emphasised, including improved communication, easier access to a variety of viewpoints, and the capacity to maintain connections beyond geographic borders.

Overall, the essay does a good job of demonstrating how Facebook helps build strong groups and meaningful relationships. It exemplifies how the platform has broadened community development opportunities beyond conventional offline constraints.

    1. Does extensively relying on Facebook for community building have any potential downsides or difficulties?
    2. How does Facebook protect its users’ privacy and safety in public spaces?
    3. Are there any noteworthy instances or case studies that highlight how Facebook networks might influence beneficial social change?
4.How has Facebook’s involvement in neighbourhood improvement changed over time? What are some likely developments or trends in this field?

    kind regards,
    Maleeha
