To begin with this assignment describes “The Danger of Social Networking” for the users. As we known, there are so many people in different groups, ages, and genders that use social networking sites. Social Networking is the grouping of individuals groups based on specific interest that members of the group may share or other words refers to as web-based services a list of other users with whom they share a connection (boyd & Ellison, 2007).
There are many online Social Networks group that have become established, including Facebook, Myspace, Bebo, Friendster, LinkedIn, Youtube, Flickr, Catster and Twitter. (boyd & Ellison, 2007). Usually, these kinds of networks are used for the users to connect their real friends and families, such as sharing their own pictures and easier for them to communicate rather than talk on the phone and e-mail or other words Social Networks can be used to make friends, find romance or even to market yourself and your business. What has been even more attractive especially to young people is the ability to link to friends on the same site such as Facebook, Myspace, Friendster and so on, whose photos, name and perhaps a brief description also appear on their profile page. As discussed by Kizza, online Social Networking unlike other forms of social networking, involves online grouping based on a website that offer specific services desired by the members of the group. Basically, users of these networks such as Myspace, Friendster, Facebook or other networks for example upon joining, create their own web pages on which they can post unprecedented to be no limit on what they could post about themselves, including pornographic of themselves and sometimes others (Kizza, 2010, p.235).
The importance point is to remember that these sites can also be misused and we need to take care of our privacy or copyright, predators, bullying, addicted, phishing or scammers and “fake”. In this situation you should think twice about the way you use social networks it is because social networking is a really dangerous. Privacy refers to have control your own personal possessions, and not to be observed without your consent (Hagg & Cummings, 2008, p. 345). The other word is privacy refers to the claim of individual, groups, or institutions to determine when, how, and to what extent information about them is communicated to others (what is privacy?, n.d). As discussed by Andrew, Rebecca & Claudia (2002), there are two ways the opportunity for bad people stolen and keep the other users data, the firstly is the information is collected when an individual visits a site and registers for example, where someone put their date of birthday or real name in her or his account in privacy page, especially for business groups. It is prove when you search the person name; all the full name and data appear through the internet and other sites such as Facebook. The other way is the information can obtained from the computer or browser passively from click stream data, such as from the on the “History Bar Line”, usually the pages or websites where the users browser are still existing on the computer history bar even though the users has deleted it, the other word is the pages existed of date the users browser and which website she or he looked at (Andrew, Rebecca & Claudia, 2002). I agree as mentioned by Andrew, Rebecca & Claudia as above, we have never known, when or who the users after us who look at our privacy and may keep our data such as date of birthday, real name and address. As I said before, in my opinion, in this situation is a really dangerous, sometimes, we often forget to sing out or log out while having fun on social networks is that almost anybody can see what we are doing, this is true everybody can read what do we post on the profile, for example, while we are tagging photos of what we did on the weekends or using social networks on company time it can be easy to forget that someone at work may see the page we browsed. In my opinion, the survey question also part of our privacy, because we respond and answer their questions, it always happen when we have a lot of members on social networking such as Facebook the survey question link from the friend’s page to our page. Usually the survey question so much fun and interesting. According to George & Philippe (2006), the survey question is subject to privacy that can interspersed with questions on topic such as economic policy, the threat of terrorism, same-sex marriage, and so on through the Facebook. In my opinion, as I said at the beginning, I agree as mentioned by George & Philippe (2006) they make the interesting survey question to attract readers or to users of Social Networks to response their answer through the Facebook wall. In this situation, all the questions and answers will appear and read to user’s site such as Facebook members what they did on their pages. As a result, a total of 506 respondents accessed the survey on the Facebook and 85 never have Facebook, 40 never heard about Facebook, 318 completed the whole survey and 225 had profile deactivate. As you can see obviously, there are huge numbers 318 who completed the survey which was privacy questions that bring to publics such as journalists and reporters where is very dangerous (George & Philippe, 2006, p. 39). In additional, remember the users always losses their privacy data such as password to log in and forget the user ID (Identity) such as email address. According to Hagg & Cummings, they losses their passwords or users Id, because they seldom to check their email I agree, sometimes the users busy, and also usually the user have too many account emails where she or he forget which passwords are belong to accounts, and also sometimes it happens when users forget to log out their email and because of the internet problem or slow. I agree, as I said before because we having fun in the social networking we forgot to sign out and sometimes it is happen when we have internet problem and slow or trouble shootings according to internet low sometimes users are lazy to wait for long time and sometimes users never care about their social networking sign out without sign out completely. It is true the users have not known how to use the social networking in the right tips. Usually the users just know and understand how to use the social networking such as add friends, search friends, edited the background of homepage but the users have no idea the email or other social networking accounts are not totally private. As mentioned by Haag & Cummings (2008) each email users send results in at least three or four copies being stored on different computers, for example first it is stored in first computer users using, second it is stored by email server the computer through which it gets onto the internet. The last one it is storted on the recipient’s computer and may achieved on the recipient’s email server (Hagg & Cummings, 2008, p. 344).
Copyright is the legal protection afforded an expression of an idea, such as a song, video game, pictures, and some of types of properties documents. I agree, as you can see, there are so many users who copy their favourite band and official video clip through the Youtube. The users usually copy their favourite video clip and paste on their social networking homepages such as Facebook or Myspace. According to Myspace, there are many official bands and musician who have official Myspace for theirs fun club, and the reason why they uploaded is to promote their new songs they put on the Myspace homepage and to share their work uploading music and have a think the young people and predetors for example usually copy the official video and songs. I do understand is a great way to get a lot of potential friends to notice, but you might want to think about whether the network could end up owning this material (Danger of Social Networking Sites, 2009). In my opinion, in this situation is really dangerous, if the users will take opportunity to copy their video such as video music and paste their favourite music on their profile or Youtube as I said at the beginning. The other dangerous is when you put your real pictures on the Facebook profile as an example; they are so many users who want to stole your real picture especially models, singers or celebrities and general person. According to this point, they love your real pictures then they upload to her or his homepage to attractive the others users to add her or him. As discussed by Wilson (2005) there are some of them use the name and pictures of dead people, in this situation, it is really dangerous because may be some of her or his relative believed she or he still alive and may be the pictures and the name the users used might be bad people. And also, to remember the online users have to be smart when they want to post something on her or his homepages, as I said in the privacy point, there are many of people who read and look at your homepages and read what did you post on the profile. As discussed by Robert, there are many students who copy the other government report or other people works from Internet documents. This behaviour is call plagiarism. Plagiarism refers to someone who using someone works without using their own words (Robert, 2008, p. 2). As mentioned by Robert, there are a lot of official documents from official websites and other school or university through the specific websites and Blogs. Now days, the users can choice different of blogs through the internet including education, general topics for example the topic where links and relates to students assignment topic, as an example for business students who study in “Marketing” course. On the other hand, not all blogs or official government websites are public but some of them set as private, even though private the users will add them an as their Bloger or member. Some of social networking such as specific website for example library social network, students must get the permission before do some research in particular library. Beside that students are trying to copy what contents are there put and any other report or material. And also, for the government documents there are a lot of documents work that student can research from their official website to copy their work such as “Annual Report” from various companies.
The other danger is the predators. Predators refers to online predators is an adult internet users who exploits vulnerable children or teenagers usually for sexual or other abusive purposes (Sommers, 2008, p. 36). A lot of teenagers who under eighteens involve in social networking for example Myspace and Facebook. According to Sommers (2008), in North of America it is crime for adults to ask anyone under the age of eighteen to take part in any sexual activity including Myspace & Facebook, in the same reading one of every five children is sexuality solicited over the internet by predators who try to set up face- to- face meeting with them. Usually predators try to reach the young teenagers to know they well, even though lot of young users liar they ages in the Social Networking. As discussed by George & Philippe (2006), the young users who under eighteen interested to know what the inside of social networking for example Myspace and Facebook, the young users do not understand what the social Network exactly use for and to have opportunity they liar their real age and add the strangers. As discuss by Sommers (2008), as internet used has exploded, the dangers to children have dramatically increase and do not matter we live, in additional as a young people they are really want to know what does sex mean, the young users usually chat with the stranger because they might think privacy between her or him to stranger, beside that it is really dangerous, because they are predators (Sommer, 2008, p. 34).
Bullying or can be expressed as “cyber-bullying” is defines as “will full and repeated harm inflicted through the medium of electronic text” (Romm & Setzekorn, 2000, p. 172). Bullying is the part of dangerous point in Social Networking. I agree bullying is a really dangerous for young users. In my opinion and some research, bully can be anything; some of the users will be bully what their looked on the photos because of fat and extra. As discussed by Setzekorn & Romm (2000) “cyber-bullying” can include a variety of tactics, such as sending nasty or treating messages, post untrue or ex-aggraded stories about the victim, impersonality the victim or intentionally excluding someone from an online group. We can see how dangers Social Networking for the young users who always bullying by other young users. According to same reading, the internet is apparently being used more and more for the bullying. The reason why they will do anything and bad thing such as jumped from gate or building and suicide is the users are too young. In other source, the 17 years old high school student jumped to his death off the west Gate Bridge after reading death threat online. In this case, kids have get this enormous power of this internet thing and it is out of control, because they are not mature enough to know what are they doing (“Teens killed in cyber, bullying epidemic,” 2009).
Addicted is one of bad habit. Once the new users became part of Social Networking, they will ignore their routine habits such as studying. In other words, addicted can describes as uncontrollable compulsion to repeat behaviour regardless of it is negative consequences (Romm & Setzekorn, 2009, p. 170). As discussed by Kizza (2010) young users usually spend a lot of time on their favourite website such as Myspace or Facebook. It is proof in her statement; “She said teen who admit Myspace is running their lives is unhealthy and addicting, yet those same teenagers will say “they are unwilling to give up their Myspace profile”(Romm & Setzetkorn, 2009, p. 169). According to reading as above, I agree what Romm & Setzekorn said in her statement, once the new users become part of social networking they will enjoy it to chat and check the messages from their friends even though the users never known with who do they talk with. Social Networking such as Myspace or Facebook can make the users feeling addicted and it is really dangerous for young people or students because they can spoil their study. I think the problem they feeling addicted; it is because the users want to know what did their friends comments on her or his photos, messages, and comments pages. I know it is so much fun if we talk, send or read the messages from member’s cyber. As discussed by Andert & Burleson (2004) there are different types of addicted that can express the first one is addicted web gambling, as you know, there so many online games that available through the social networking for example Facebook. The other that make the user feeling addicted is addicted on chat, as you can see on Facebook, the users are able to communicate rather than sending email on the bottom bar chat room online, and the last one is read the other Blogs as we blogs can be bored and enjoy if the bloger know how to attract the readers to visit her or him blogs (Adert & Burselon, 2007, p. 73-74).
In additional, “Phishing” or “Scammers”, as discussed by Jackobsson & Myers (2007) phishing refers when someone tries to trick you through the internet asking for personal details such as a credit card numbers, telephone numbers, addresses, schools or occupations, parents address, usernames and passwords. Phishing is a common way to steal identities online in the other words is a technique to gain information for the purpose of identity theft. There are number of scammers on solid networks (the person who expert in computer repair usually the mechanic) as discussed by Seymour (2010), one of solid who trying to modified the customer computer for repair and trying to steal the data that had existed (Seymour, 2010). The data refer to the user personal information including the credit card number, date of birthday, photo and address that the user usually use for online shopping on ebay and checking email.
Another danger is some of profiles are “fake”. Fake refers to not real. Usually ‘fake” used someone picture, however as I said before, “fake” can be anything is nothing about use someone real pictures where we upload through the Social Networking such as Facebook, or Myspace, but also age and identity someone also part of the “fake” point and have to get attention. As discussed by Robert, there is one case in America that occurred in September 2005, a 16 years old girl from Port Washington, New York, fell victim to a cyber predator. The girl met someone on “Myspace” who claimed he was a teenager boy (the young boy was 37 years old), and they chatted online a few times, as you can see how easy for him to seek her out in real life or person just “fake” his age. The other danger is the “fake” will post the fake interesting news for example free service by Hong Kong government. According to Broomley & Romano (2005), a particular case of free service used by the Hong Kong government for publishing it is information was found on April Fool’s Day, when a 14 years old boy posted a “fake” news report on the twitter (Broomely & Romano, 2005, p. 38) Again, as mention by boyd & Elison (2007), users began adding acquaintances and interesting looking stranger to expand their reach. The ultimate collector was fake profile representing iconic fictional characters such as celebrities, concepts and other such entities. There “fake stars” outraged the company who banished fake profile and eliminated the most popular feature boyd & Elison (2007).
In conclusion, Social Networking is a very dangerous not only for young people and also for the mature people because they can steal the real picture, personal Information such as passwords to log in the Social Networks. And also, the users are usually losses their privacy data such as users id and passwords. Please remember be careful to read what the other users on twitter, it was proof when young boy post the fake news on twitter. Suggestion, always make guide the users are at the right site when log in and also make sure they are not entering too much private data, such as their home address or what school they go to even though they known each other in real person for example friends to friends. In my point is be acutely aware of the hazards of Social Networks and also be always remember what is possible online. As with most things in life there are opportunities and there are risks however eliminate needless risk. There is never a need to share private confidential information online. Use social networks to share and promote ideas. Be a giver but don not give what you would not want just anyone seeing in public just by looking your or seeing into your home or bedroom.
